The Lazy Way to Find Best Web Hosting

The truth is that I am always struggling when I need to choose right web hosting provider.

Finding good website hosting provider is not an easy task. Finding great is even harder.

I spent countless hours trying to figure out what is the best choice for me.

Now I have decided to put all my findings in this blog post for my future reference.

This reference blog post will become my lazy way to find the best hosting provider for my future projects.

A disclaimer: This is not a paid review of any hosting provider.

Choosing between cloud hosting and dedicated hosting?

If you have a great large project for example, you developed new social network and you need to choose between cloud and dedicated hosting choice is not easy.

We also had to choose when we developed SilverReader.

SilverReader – our RSS reader platform downloads thousands of RSS / XML files per day. We needed hosting provider that doesn’t charge inbound traffic.

Almost all cloud providers now offer free inbound traffic. This includes Amazon and Azure.

This suited our needs.

The next step was finding cheapest, but reliable cloud provider and compare prices with dedicated server hosting.

We have soon realized that we can find much cheaper dedicated hosting that any cloud hosting.

Here are approximate pricing of hosting providers:

Microsoft Azure cloudAmazon AWS cloudDigitalOcean cloudHetzner dedicated hosting
Quadcore CPU + 7GB RAMQuadcore CPU + 8GB RAMQuadcore CPU + 8GB RAMQuadcore CPU + 32GB RAM
175$ per month127$ per month80$ per month65$ per month – 19% VAT refund for non Germany countries

You can get a discount with some cloud providers (I think maybe 30-60$ per month) if you sign 6 or 12 month contract.

You can compare prices of different cloud providers here:

The choice was easy. We decided to go with dedicated hosting.

We got 24GB more RAM for less money.

For USA based dedicated servers I recommend that you look:

SoYouStart  OVH dedicated servers for startups which starts with 42$ per month.

If you want more advanced infrastructure take a look at the OHV dedicated servers offer.

What is the best website hosting?

What if you have a website or blog based on WordPress and you want to find a cheap and reliable website hosting?

Some WordPress websites and blogs are quite huge and require reliable and fast hosting.

Here is a list of best WordPress / Website hosting providers I have found:

a2hosting4$ per monthUnlimited sites,
SSD option for 5.5$ per month
unixguruhosting6.67$ per month10 domains,
NGNIX + Varnish/ Apache,
Cheaper with 2 year contract
godaddy hosting3.5$ per month1 domain,
many of my friend migrated to Godaddy from Bluehost lately,
fast for Wordpress
Coolicehost4$ per month2 domains,
NGNIX,
SSD option included
arvixe hosting4$ per month6 domains,
reliable and fairly fast,
have Windows hosting
bluehost hosting5$ per monthUnlimited sites,
lately my friends have issues with Bluehost (website down for 2 hours and more) Before was reliable.

From this list I recommend CooliceHost and A2Hosting. Although CooliceHost only offers 2 domains in starter package they do have NGNIX and SSD is included in this price.

Any of other hosting providers listed in this table should also work fine.

Please let me know if I have forgotten some good hosting provider and don’t forget to subscribe to this blog and make sure you don’t miss any of upcoming blog posts.

Comparing a dedicated server with cloud servers is not nearly a like for like comparison.
The biggest difference being that using single dedicated server you are exposed to the risk of hardware failure. If that did happen the Hertzner are only bound to replace the hardware, your data is not their concern. With cloud hosting hardware redundancy is built in, physical servers and disks can fail with no end user effect.

Hi Oliver. Thanks for comment. You can build hardware redundant server architecture based on dedicated servers which will probably cost less then cloud.
To be save from failure on Azure website for example you need to purchase two Web roles. With one Web role on Azure you are not save.
If I purchase 3 servers on Hetzner. 1 small and cheap server for HAProxy load balancing and 2 for website hosting I am getting same protection.
